It is a little bit late to mention this. The magazine “Totummy” was printed back in April this year, by the publishers club. London Exhibition – Opens November 8th

On November 8th, the 51st Exhibition of the longest -running group of Fantastic/visionary artists opens in London at La Galleria, Pall Mall. The Society for Art of Imagination

I will have my painting “Disquite” in the show. There will also be a selection of my Artist Jewellery for sale.

This Exhibition will be opened by the world renown harpist, Professor David Watkins, who will give a short recital of harp music after his opening speech.

There will be originals and prints, with work from many artists including Giger, Laurie Lipton, Brigid Marlin and Michael Fuchs. The Exhibition runs from the 7th – 12th of November

Egg Tempera

I have recently completed a short course at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, taking me thought the basics of Egg Tempera painting. I was keen to learn the technique as it seems a natural progression from my work using the Mische Technique. I had always assumed that it would be a tricky and complicated thing to learn. However I was really pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to prepare the paint. So If you have been thinking about giving it a go, don’t fret over it. It really is a simple as mixing an egg yoke with some pigment. So here it the painting I was worked on in class. Not quite finished but almost there

I really like the speed that I can work at with the egg tempera compared to oil paint, hardly any drying time. But I am going to take some more time experimenting with mixing oils and egg tempera in different ways. If you want to learn more about egg tempera I recommend taking a class with the lecturer I had, Ben Senior but if you can’t here are the instructions for making paint

Jewellery making

Lately I have been busy making some jewellery featuring my art work. It has been a very long time since I last did this(I studied Jewellery at art school) and I have to say I forgot how much I enjoy the process. It also means I now have a large stash of jewellery to accessorise with each morning, yay.

I finished both these drawings a couple of weeks ago but have only just got around to taking some pictures.

Australian artists I love – Part 1

As an Australian artist living and working overseas (in London). I thought I would write a little on the Australian artists that have influenced me, while I was growing up in Melbourne, a gem of a city with a lively arts culture. I might make this a bit of an ongoing post as there a number of artist I would really like to mention.

So I’ll start with these two. James Gleeson and Vali Myers. When I think of Artists that left their mark on me these are the two that leap to mind.

I really can not describe how much of an effect James Gleeson’s work had on me. I saw a number of his shows and recall being totally blown away one day by a large collection at the Pinacotheca gallery, Melbourne in the mid 80’s. The paintings where large and otherworldly. All a combination of landscape, portraits and abstract marks beautifully merged, layered and painted together. I was a poor art student desperately wondering how I could raise enough cash to purchase just a small bit of work to keep around me. Sadly, I couldn’t do it.

Another memorable show featuring Gleeson’s work was at Heide Park and Art Gallery. This gallery was one of my favourites. Situated slightly out of the city surrounded by land often filled with sculptures. It was a day out to wonder the grounds, dip your feet in the river, picnic and sometimes even attend a music festival and check out some great art. It has a rich history as an artists community stretching back to the 1930’s

Another artist I want to mention in this first post is Vali Myers. Her adventurous spirit and artworks appealed to me. It seemed to me that art just kind of flowed from her. In her dress, her makeup, her tattoos and of course her drawings. She hung out with other artists, musicians of legend. To me she was an inspiration, one of the few Australian women artists I ever heard much about. And I adored her drawings, intricate and personal, months in the making. I am sad to say I have just missed an exhibition of her work in Melbourne at Outré gallery. However the good news is there is a book (hopefully shipping internationaly soon). Details here.
